A short review of the Birkner historyIn 1903 the bookseller Alfred Birkner (1868 - 1923) founded the
publishing house Birkner in Berlin, and after two years he already
published the first "Birkner directory for the paper industry",
containing detailed data on all pulp, paper and board mills in
Germany and Switzerland. This directory was a real sensation at
that time and became a great success.
From 1907 to 1914 the BIRKNER appeared annually. The 1914
edition for the first time also contained information on paper
converters, rag merchants, paper and board merchants as well as
paper agents in Germany and Switzerland. In 1920 the scope of
information which Birkner had at its disposal, increased in bulk,
because now the content was completed by the countries of Denmark,
Austria and the Netherlands. Since 1929 one could speak of the
BIRKNER as a real European directory as it informed on the paper
industry of 26 countries.
In 1965 the publishing house changed hands and settled in Hamburg,
being at 100 per cent a subsidiary company of the publishers Dumrath
& Fassnacht. Since then the directory has been
improved and expanded permanently. The increasing demand on the
part of companies situated outside Europe for data on firms being
active worldwide in the paper industry made it necessary for the
publishing house Birkner to extend its catalogue. Since 1991 the
BIRKNER PaperWorld has been published, the directory for the
international paper industry. With the edition
BIRKNER 95 - European and International PaperWorld both directories, the
EUROPA BIRKNER and the BIRKNER PaperWorld have been
united to one single volume, so that the user now really has got
the whole world of paper in his hands. At the same time the
electronic era has been started at Birkner with the motto "The
whole world is a disc": the 95 edition was the first one to
be published also on CD-ROM, a very important and successful step
in the history of the publishing house. Since 1997 the international directory for the paper industry is also available as internet database under
www.paper-world.com.
The jubilee edition BIRKNER 2005 – International
PaperWorld has been granted the ”EADP Award for Quality and
Excellence in Directory Publishing” as best European
business-to-business print directory. The user can find in the edition Birkner more than 26,000 current company profiles.
The Birkner editions are available as book, CD-ROM and
internet database under www.paper-world.com.
In the year 2009 the internet application www.paper-world.comhas been granted the VerzeichnismedienPreis in Gold. The portal receives this award for its unique connection of structurized company profiles and current trade and company news with highest prize in the category Electronic Media by VDAV Verband Deutscher Auskunfts- und Verzeichnismedien. This way international readers may retrieve current news regarding industry trends and innovations directly and chronologically with a full text research or by source. In addition, the news are linked to the company profiles, so the user may check them with regard to the company itself. Furthermore, this unique content generating is completed by video presentations that may be played directly from the company news or from the company profile.
In 1996 the publishing house Birkner expanded its scope of
directories and published the first edition of
Birkner's Beverage World. This directory contains company profiles
about the international beverage industry as well as on the
supplying industry. Of course, this directory is also published on
CD-ROM. It is available as print edition, CD-ROM and internet database
www.beverage-world.com.
Since 2002 our internet database eurolignum.com supplies all important data regarding the European wood industry and is hereby completing the product range of the Birkner publishing house.
The publishing house Birkner feels bound to its long history and
always endeavours to meet all customer requirements by a maximum
degree of quality, i. e. our main criteria is to be up-to-date and
precise.
